Where can you see humpback whales in Colombia? Colombia is where the world’s largest marine mammals give birth to their calves, far from the icy waters of Antarctica, in the calm waters of the bays off the Colombian Pacific coast, safe from predators. They stay here from June to October so that their calves can put on enough weight to withstand the cold of the South Pole. But where are the best places to watch humpback whales in Colombia?
Here are the 5 best places to watch humpback whales in Colombia.
Utria Nature Park
Discover Utria Natural Park and sail on the calm waters of the Ensenada to observe and photograph the humpback whales of Colombia, with their white bellies and huge fins measuring between 12 and 16 metres long.
During your stay in Utria Park, you can also enjoy one of the region’s only white sand beaches, the splendid and aptly named Playa Blanca, stroll through the forest, admire the mangroves and meet the Embera communities.
Humpback whales in NuquÃ, Colombia
The star of Colombia’s Pacific coast, Nuquà is renowned for its whale-watching. You’ll also discover phenomenal biodiversity, and make the most of your stay by surfing at Guachalito, strolling through the forests and enjoying the thermal waters. In addition to the humpback whales of Colombia, Nuquà is also renowned for its seabed, making it a famous spot for scuba diving.
When it comes to beaches, we recommend heading south of Nuquà to Terco, Terquito, Piedra and Termales.
Whale watching at Bahia Solano
Just as welcoming as NuquÃ, Bahia Solano has all the same attractions. As well as the humpback whales that swim close to the coast, you can enjoy its beautiful black sand beaches, its waterfalls that flow directly into the sand and its lush vegetation during your forest walks.
Isla Gorgona Nature Park
From Guapim, a village in the middle of the Pacific jungle, discover an island sheltered from mass tourism where nature is preserved. The island was also home to a high-security prison for 26 years until 1983. On this true paradise on earth, you can go hiking, enjoy its dream beaches and, of course, watch the whales of Colombia! Diving enthusiasts will also discover the splendid seabed around Isla Gorona.
There is just one hotel on the island, and from the restaurant terrace you can watch the humpback whales pass by. It’s exceptional to have breakfast and watch these giants of the sea play on the waves! What’s more, the island is home to hundreds of monkeys who welcome you as soon as you arrive. Finally, dozens of different species of birds live on the island. Don’t miss our video on this magnificent destination!
Buenaventura, the economical option
Near Cali, the beaches of Ladrilleros, Juanchaco and La Barra await you. They are popular with Colombians, especially at weekends. Choose La Barra for more peace and quiet. Along the way, visit the pretty fishing village of La Trocha. Mangroves, waterfalls, rivers and natural pools await you, as do the whales that swim close to the beach.
