Caño Cristales: everything you need to know before visiting the five-coloured river

There is a river in Colombia that changes colour.

Caño Cristales : tout savoir avant de visiter la rivière aux cinq couleurs

Not in a metaphorical sense. Literally. Between June and November, the waters of Caño Cristales take on shades of yellow, blue, green, black and red – five colours that coexist in the same current, stretching for several kilometres of rock and white water, in the heart of a region that few travellers have yet explored.

The river of five colours. That is what it is called. And for once, the nickname does not betray the reality.

Caño Cristales is located in the Serranía de la Macarena, an isolated mountain range in the Colombian Llanos, several hundred kilometres from any major city. You don’t end up there by chance. You go there because you’ve decided that some things are worth the detour, even when the detour is long.

It is simply Colombia, at one of its most unlikely moments. After ten years of helping people discover this country, I still haven’t found the words to describe it to someone who hasn’t seen it.

What makes Caño Cristales unique in the world

The colour of Caño Cristales is not caused by a mineral, a reflection of light or an optical illusion. It comes from an endemic aquatic plant: Macarenia clavigera.

This microscopic algae, which grows nowhere else on the planet, covers the riverbed and takes on its colours when exposed to light under specific conditions: a temperature, flow rate and amount of sunlight that only come together at certain times of the year.

The result resembles a painter’s palette laid upon the river, except that no one has arranged it. It is simply Colombian nature, in all its uniqueness.

The wildlife of Caño Cristales and the Serranía de la Macarena

The Serranía de la Macarena is an exceptional biogeographical crossroads, situated at the junction of four major natural regions: the Amazon, the Andes, the Llanos and the Chocó. It is one of the most biodiverse areas in the whole of Colombia.

Over 550 species of birds have been recorded in the region: parrots, toucans, kingfishers and herons. Reptiles are also abundant: spectacled caimans on the banks of the Guayabero, freshwater turtles and iguanas. The mammals, which are more elusive, include howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys and giant otters in certain areas.

The boat trip on the Guayabero River precedes the visit to the park. This is often where the first sightings are made – caimans on the banks, birds flying by – if you’re lucky.

Flora: a delicate balance

Macarenia clavigera is the star of the show, but it is not alone. The vegetation reflects the Serranía’s position as a crossroads: Amazonian and Andean species coexist just a few kilometres apart. The tepuis rising from the forest create microclimates where rare orchids and carnivorous plants thrive. The banks of Caño Cristales are covered in ferns and bromeliads that filter the light until well into the afternoon.

It is this delicate balance between light, water, rock and vegetation that gives rise to the five-colour phenomenon. Disrupt any one of these factors, and the Macarenia clavigera will disappear. That is why all chemical products are strictly prohibited in the park: sun creams, insect repellents, soaps. There can be no exceptions.

When to visit Caño Cristales: the season of colours

This is the question everyone asks, and the most important one to bear in mind before planning.

Macarenia clavigera does not flower all year round. It requires a specific water level: enough to survive, but not enough to be submerged. This period runs from June to November, with a peak generally observed between July and October.

During the dry season (December to March), the river is too low; the plants survive but do not change colour. At the height of the rainy season, the flow is too strong and the colours are hidden beneath the water. It is in this in-between period, when nature finds its balance, that the five colours appear.

Note: a visit outside this period is still possible; the Serranía is beautiful in all seasons, but without the colours. If you ask me for the best time to visit: July to September.

Things to do in Caño Cristales

A stroll through the park

Four different trails allow you to explore Caño Cristales from a variety of angles: the natural pools, the waterfalls, and the rocks carved by centuries of flowing water. Every bend in the river reveals a different scene. The light changes with every hour of the day, and with it, the intensity of the colours.

Les activités à Caño Cristales

The boat trip on the Guayabero River

Before entering the park, a twenty-minute boat trip along the Guayabero River offers the chance to admire the riverbanks and their wildlife, in an atmosphere still untouched by mass tourism.

Caño Cristalitos

Less well-known than its bigger brother, Caño Cristalitos is an adjacent river that shares similar features on a smaller scale. It’s the perfect place to visit on the first day, before heading to Caño Cristales itself.

Swimming

Some of the park’s natural pools are open for swimming: basins carved out of the rock by millennia of flowing water, with clear, cool waters. A moment suspended in time, between the heat of the Llanos and the coolness of the water.

The folk evening at La Macarena

The village of La Macarena is the only base from which to visit Caño Cristales. In the evening, some accommodation providers organise an evening of traditional music, dancing and local cuisine – a unique way to round off the day, and a reminder that La Macarena is a lived-in community, not just a backdrop.

Is it possible to visit Caño Cristales independently?

No. Access to the park is strictly regulated: every visitor must be accompanied by a licensed local guide, and entry permits must be arranged through a registered agency. There is no independent option for visiting Caño Cristales.

How do you get to Caño Cristales?

Caño Cristales cannot be reached by road from Bogotá under reasonable conditions. You can get there by light aircraft from Bogotá, Medellín, Villavicencio or Cali, depending on the season and the airline. The flight takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on the departure point.

Once there, the journey to the park is by boat and then by 4×4. There are no tarmac roads leading to Caño Cristales. This is part of its charm, but it also presents a real logistical challenge. If poorly organised, this trip can become frustrating. That is why we manage all domestic flights and transfers from start to finish.

Comment se rendre à Caño Cristales ?

We have designed the Caño Cristales Tour: three days in the area, two visits to the park along different trails, a boat trip, a folklore evening, and the option to extend your stay by one to three nights for those who wish to take their time.

For travellers wishing to incorporate Caño Cristales into a wider itinerary, including the Pink River of San José del Guaviare, the Amazon pink dolphins, Gorgona Island and Cartagena, our ‘Off the Beaten Track in Colombia’ tour offers a 13-day journey that connects these unique destinations in a coherent itinerary.

What you need to know before you go

Strict regulations

Access to the park is limited to a certain number of visitors per day. Advance booking is essential, particularly during the high season (August–October). Local guides are compulsory: you are not allowed to enter Caño Cristales on your own.

No chemicals

Sunscreen, insect repellent, soap, shampoo – none of these are permitted in the park or its immediate surroundings. Non-filtering mineral-based alternatives may be used, but the general rule is simple: enter clean, leave clean, and do not put anything in the water.

Accommodation

We spend every night in the village of La Macarena, a small, friendly village with simple, welcoming family-run accommodation. No hotel complexes, no international chains. That’s by design, and it’s better that way.

Recommended duration

A minimum of two nights for two days in the park. Three nights for those who want to explore Caño Cristalitos, El Guayabero and the surrounding area at a leisurely pace.

Is it a safe destination?

Yes, today. The region went through a difficult period due to the armed conflict in Colombia, but it has been open to tourists since 2009 and the situation has stabilised. We monitor developments closely and only include this destination in our tours when conditions allow.

How do I book?

As early as possible, especially for July to September: domestic flights to La Macarena have limited capacity and fill up quickly. We recommend booking at least two months in advance. That said, last-minute seats do sometimes become available, so it’s always worth asking.

What Caño Cristales says about Colombia

There is something distinctly Colombian about Caño Cristales: the way nature reserves its most beautiful sights for the places that are hardest to reach.

The river isn’t challenging in the sense of being difficult; it isn’t dangerous, and access is well organised. It’s worth the effort because of the decision to step off the beaten track, to take a flight to a village most people have never even heard of, and to trust that Colombia still has plenty to offer when you venture a little beyond the postcard views.
