Overview

DAY 1: Transfer to Mamey, starting point of the first trek to the Lost City.

DAY 2: Hiking to La Cabaña Wiwa, Mutanyani and Paraiso Teyuna.

DAY 3:  Trek to the magnificent Lost City.

DAY 4: Return to La Cabaña Wiwa with visit and bath in waterfalls.

DAY 5: Return to Santa Marta.

Day 1: START OF THE TREK TO THE LOST CITY

 

To reach the magnificent archaeological ruins of the Lost City, you have to walk. Impossible to reach it by car, it’s a real adventure!

  • Transfer of approximately 3 hours by 4×4 from Santa Marta to Mamey.
  • Start of the trek to the Lost City with a hike of approximately 7.6 kilometers, between 4 and 5 hours of total walking during the day.
  • Stop halfway at the Mirador de las tres cruces to taste delicious exotic fruits and have lunch.
  • On the way, possibility ofswimming in natural pools.
  • Continuation of the walk to the “Adán” or “Alfredo” hut, to spend the first night.
  • Dinner.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 2: MUTAnyI

 

The trek to the Lost City is considered medium to high intensity. It’s about forty km to go there and back.

  • Hike to Cabaña Wiwa.
  • Descent from the valley towards the Buritaca River for a refreshing bath.
  • Lunch.
  • On the way, discovery of thesmall village Kogi called Mutanyi.
  • Observation of exotic fauna and flora.
  • Continuation towards the Paraiso Teyuna camp.
  • The total walking time is between 8 and 9 hours.
  • Dinner.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 3: The Lost City

The Lost City was probably the main seat of all the villages in the valley. It was abandoned during the period of colonization and hidden from the Spanish.

  • Wake up early to start the climb to the Lost City, 1200 steps to reach the stone city.
  • The city is made up of paved paths, built on terraces and platforms, ceremonial centers, accommodation and food storage rooms
  • Free time to enjoy the site and the magnificent jungle that surrounds it.
  • Return to Paraiso Teyuna camp for lunch.
  • Continuation towards the Wiwa Cabin.
  • The total walking time is between 8 and 9 hours.
  • Dinner.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 4: PARAÍSO TEYUNA

  • Detour from the main trail to cross the Buritaca River with a cart.
  • Arrival at a first waterfall, Cascada de Pablo.
  • Free time to rest and enjoy a bath.
  • Continuation of the walk to the second waterfall, El Abanico then the Campamento de las Cascadas, for lunch.
  • Discovery oftypical crops of the region: cassava, malanga and bananas.
  • Visit a third waterfall, Cascada Tina, located just 5 minutes from the cabin.
  • Installation for the night. Dinner.
  • Total walking time is approximately 5 hours.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 6: RETURN

  • Crossing the Buritaca River using a cart.
  • Ascent of approximately 1h30 followed by a 20-minute journey to Neva Teyuna School.
  • Return to the path of day 1 then to Mamey for lunch.
  • End of the trek to the Lost City.
  • Transfer by 4×4 to Santa Marta.
