Overview

DAY 1: Transfer to El Mamey, starting point of the first day of the Lost City trek.

DAY 2 : Trek to La Cabaña Wiwa, Mutanyani and the Paraiso Teyuna.

DAY 3 : Reach the magnificent Lost City.

DAY 4 : Return to La Cabaña Wiwa with a visit and a bath in the waterfalls.

DAY 5 : Return to Santa Marta.

Day 1: START OF THE LOST CITY TREK

 

To reach the magnificent archaeological ruins of the Lost City, you have to walk. Impossible to reach it by car, it is a real adventure!

  • Transfer by 4w of about 3 hours from Santa Marta to Mamey.
  • Begin the Lost City trek by walking about 7,6 km. That is between 4h to 5h total walking in the day.
  • Stop halfway in El Mirador de las tres cruces to taste delicious exotic fruits and have lunch.
  • On the way, possibility of bathing in natural swimming pools.
  • Continue to the hut “Adan” or “Alfredo”, to spend the first night.
  • Dinner.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 2 : MUTANYI

 

The trek to the Lost City is considered of medium to high intensity. It is about 40 km there and back.

  • Hike until the Cabaña Wiwa.
  • Descent from the valley to the Buritaca River for a refreshing bath.
  • Lunch.
  • On the way, discover the small Kogi village called Mutanyi.
  • Watch exotic fauna and flora.
  • Continue to the Paraiso Teyuna camp.
  • The total walking time is between 8 and 9 hours.
  • Dinner.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 3: The Lost City

The Lost City was probably the main location of all the villages in the valley. It was abandoned during the colonization period and hidden from the Spaniards.

  • Wake up early to start the climb to the Lost City. 1200 steps are necessary to reach the stone city.
  • The city is composed of paved paths and its built on terraces and platforms. It has ceremonial centers, lodging and food storage rooms.
  • Spend some time at leisure to enjoy the site and the beautiful jungle that surrounds it.
  • Return to the Paraiso Teyuna camp for lunch.
  • Continue to the Wiwa Hut.
  • The total walking time is between 8 and 9 hours.
  • Dinner.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Jour 4 : TEYUNA PARADISE

  • Detour from the main trail to cross the Buritaca River with a cart.
  • Arrival at the first waterfall, the Cascada de Pablo.
  • Spend some time at leisure to enjoy a bath.
  • Continue walking until the second waterfall, El Abanico and then the Campamento de las Cascadas, for lunch.
  • Discover he typical crops of the region: cassava, malanga and bananas.
  • Visit a third waterfall, located at only 5 minutes from the hut.
  • Installation for the night.
  • Dinner.
  • The total walking time is about 5 hours.
  • Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net.

Day 6 : RETURN

  • Cross the Buritaca River by a local form of transportation, a cart.
  • Ascension of about 1h30 followed by a 20 minutes trip to the Nueva Teyuna school.
  • Return to the main path and then to El Mamey for lunch.
  • End of the Lost City trek.
  • Transfer by shared vehicle to Santa Marta.
