Overview
DAY 1: Arrival in Neiva and transfer to Villavieja. Walk in the desert.
DAY 2: Journey to San Agustin and visit to the San Agustin Archaeological Park of Colombia.
DAY 3: ExploreAlto de los Idolos, Isnos, Estrecho de Magdalena and 2 waterfalls.
DAY 4: Walk, bike ride or horseback ride of Tablon, Chaquira and Pelota.
DAY 5: Transfer to Popayan and walking tour of the city.
Day 1: Tatacoa Desert
Under its appearance of a desert, Tatacoa is in reality a dry and tropical forest which extends over more than 330km2. There is a red desert, then there is a gray desert. A change of scenery guaranteed!
- Arrival in Neiva and transfer by vehicle to Villavieja.
- Installation in your hotel.
- Guided walk in Cusco, the red part of the desert and Los Hoyos, the gray part.
- Discovery of the stars in the evening, at the small local astronomy observatory.
- Night in Villavieja.
Day 2: San Agustin Archaeological Park
300 monumental sculptures are spread throughout the park. They are the vestige of a lost civilization whose dating is still subject to controversy. Sculptures of African animals and people with turbans add to the mystery surrounding them.
- Transfer to San Agustin in the morning.
- Installation in your hotel.
- French-speaking guided tour of the Archaeological Park San Agustin in Colombia.
- The Archaeological Park has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995.
- Night in San Agustin.
Day 3: Alto de los Idolos, Isnos and the Magdalena River
A sacred place intended for religious ceremonies, the Isnos Archaeological Park is the 2nd archaeological site in the area.
- Explore the surroundings of San Agustin in Colombia with a French-speaking guide.
- French speaking tour of the Archaeological Park of Isnos and the Alto de los Idolos.
- Descend the mountain to observe the‘Estrecho de Magdalena where the Magdalena River (the longest in Colombia) reaches only 2.2 meters< /strong>, geological constraints oblige.
- Continuation towards 2 magnificent waterfalls, el Santo de Bordones and el Salto de Mortiño of 220 and 170 meters high respectively.
- Night in San Agustin.
Day 4: el tablon, la chaquira and la pelota
El Tablón, La Chaquira, La Pelota and Purutal are four sites in the rural area of the municipality of San Agustín where it is possible to observe pieces of Augustinian statuary.
- Trip on foot, by bike or on horseback to visit 4 exceptional sites.
- Crossing the rural area to arrive at Pelota and Purutal where the sculptures have been coated with natural dyes original to the period.
- At the Tablón there is an ethnographicand archaeological museum, as well as 5 female sculptures measuring 2 meters high.
- In the mountainous area of Chaquira,human and animal sculpturescarved from volcanic stone look out over the Magdalena valley. The view is spectacular.
- Night in San Agustin.
Day 5: POPAYAN, THE WHITE CITY OF COLOMBIA
The best architects and artisans of the colonial era worked in Popayán, which is, with Cartagena de Indias, one of the most important cities in Colombia for its architecture.
- Travel to Popayan.
- Crossing the Paramo, a unique ecosystem in the tropics with unique flora and fauna.
- French-speaking guided tour of the town of Popayan.
- Night in Popayan.
