As we have said so much before, Colombia is a very diverse country. This time, we would like to take you to the southwest of the country, to two departments nestled in the heart of the Andes mountain range. These are the departments of Huila and Cauca.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, we have created a video to make you want to visit these departments that combine archaeology, culture and a change of scenery!
However, if you can’t watch the video, you will find the transcript below:
Hello! We are going to visit the departments of Huila and Cauca with the San Agustin Archaeological Park, the Tatacoa Desert and the city of Popayan, come!
San Agustin Archaeological Park
We are in the San Agustin Archaeological Park, a UNESCO heritage site since 1995. It is a set of religious and funerary monuments of a civilization that reached its peak between the 1st and 8th centuries AD. There are more than 300 sculptures with realistic and abstract motifs.
The origin of the sculptures remains mysterious because most of the site has not yet been excavated and no traces of writing have been discovered.
You will see sculptures such as the warrior with two scepters or the midwife with the mother. They are mainly female figures with children and many tombs of great artistic richness.

The Tatacoa Desert
Under its desert appearance, Tatacoa is actually a dry tropical forest covering an area of 330km2 and is located in the municipality of Villavieja. It is an area very rich in fossils, especially mammals, amphibians and reptiles, etc., then it has 2 characteristic colors: the red called Cusco and the gray called los Hoyos. The living conditions are very harsh, so there is little animal and plant life.
Popayan
Finally, Popayan, the capital of the department of Cauca, is nicknamed the white city of Colombia because it is all white. Its architecture is very impressive because the best craftsmen of the time worked here. Popayan and Cartagena de Indias are the jewels of the country’s architecture. Several religious communities have built their churches here. Popayan is also the only city in Latin America to have been declared a gastronomic city by UNESCO for its unique culinary traditions.
A trip to Colombia is above all a varied trip, so don’t wait any longer!
