What to do in Tayrona Park?

Tayrona Park is a fascinating natural reserve and you often ask us questions about this beautiful place. What to do in Tayrona Park? Where is it? What to visit? So we have prepared a great video to give you information about this Natural Park but above all to make you want to go there!

But if you don’t have time to see it, keep reading…

Tayrona National Natural Park

Tayrona Park is one of our favorite places in Colombia! It is located in the north of the country, on the Caribbean coast and it is the 2nd most visited natural park in Colombia after the Rosario Islands located near Cartagena.

To visit it, you will start with a walk in the rainforest. You will follow paths built with stilts and wood on the rivers and then you will walk among very large rocks. They look like dinosaur eggs! After 1h15 of walking, you will arrive at the first beach, Arrecifes. It’s heavenly.

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

With 32 km of maritime area and 150 km of land, Tayrona Park is home to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal massif in the world, with 5,770 meters of altitude just 42 km from the sea. A 5-day trek is necessary to reach the lost city, an archaeological site of great cultural importance and breathtaking beauty.

The Sierra Nevada and Tayrona Park in general are also home to dozens and dozens of endemic animals and plants, that is, they can only be seen here, such as the blue lizard, the howler monkey, certain underwater algae, etc.

The Kogi indigenous people

This park is also home to the Kogi indigenous people, an Amerindian people who live in complete economic and intellectual self-sufficiency. These men and women have a very strong bond with nature, to the point of considering themselves its guardians. They call themselves “big brothers” and it is their mission to warn us, the little brothers, about the dangers of our way of life. We are killing the earth, they repeat during our meetings…and they are right.

Water in Tayrona Park

Several rivers have their source in the Sierra Nevada and they cross the entire Tayrona Park before flowing into the sea, still in the park. You can go down the Don Diego River in a buoy until it reaches the sea and observe a multitude of birds and even monkeys!

Finally, since the park is a protected nature reserve, you will find dozens of virgin, wild and magnificent beaches. They are accessible on foot and on horseback, such as Cabo San Juan, Piscina, Playa Cristal… It is truly paradise on earth!
