Colombia is a country with a wide variety of landscapes. On the one hand, thanks to its geographical position close to the tropics, with coastlines on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and on the other, thanks to its impressive mountain system. Locals call the latter area the Andean region. Here you’ll find the country’s most important cities, as well as colonial villages and natural wonders. These are the landscapes of Colombia: the Andean region.
Landscapes of Colombia: the Andean region
Department of Santander
Located in the north-east of Colombia, Santander is an arid and rugged department. Its capital is the city of Bucaramanga, which boasts a very active nightlife. Colombia’s landscapes are full of contrasts, thanks in particular to the orange colour of the earth. The region also has purple, white, black, grey and red earth. You can also try your hand at painting with naturally coloured earth!
Department of Antioquia
The department stretches from the Andes to the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is Medellin.
Departments of Boyaca and Cundinamarca
These two neighbouring departments are located on the Cundiboyacense plateau. Their capitals are Tunja and Bogotá respectively.
Departments of Caldas, QuindÃo and Risaralda: the coffee region
Made up of 3 small departments with a hilly geography, it is known as the coffee region because its economy has revolved around this product for decades. Filled with colourful colonial villages, you’ll be transported back to another era.
Department of Huila and Cauca
The capital of Huila is the town of Neiva, and in pre-Columbian times the territory was dominated by the San Agustin culture. The capital of Cauca is Popayan, the birthplace of one of Colombia’s most important rivers, the Cauca.
Department of Nariño
Located in the extreme south of the country, it shares its borders with Ecuador and the Pacific Ocean.
