Between June and October, humpback whales come to spend their holidays in Colombia, in Ensenada de Utria in the Pacific region of Colombia. Why not do the same?
Every year, these giants of the sea travel 8,500 kilometers from Antarctica, all along the Pacific coast, to come and reproduce and then give birth to their calves in the Colombian Pacific region. A real family trip!
Humpback Whale Watching in Colombia
From Nuquí or Bahia Solano, you will take a boat equipped with a hydrophone (a microphone to use underwater) and you will go in search of humpback whales. Once seen from afar, you follow their tracks to appreciate them up close, to feel their power.
“It is impossible to describe the emotion felt. It is a mixture of happiness and fear to know that these enormous animals are swimming just a few meters from our boat, to feel their breathing so close and to see the majesty of their dance, of their incredible jumps, it is as if the whales like to be observed. It is magical” declares Mr. Lozé after his experience in Nuquí.
The Colombian Pacific is one of the wettest areas on the planet, with more than 10,000 mm3 of rainfall per year, that is to say, a lot of rain. The north is made up of bays and coves, it is a jungle with great biodiversity. The south has a less rugged geography, rather flat, with cliffs and beaches lined with mangroves, crossed by fast-flowing rivers.
The Ensenada of Utria
The Ensenada de Utria National Natural Park is located in this corner of the far west of Colombia. Composed of a wide variety of ecosystems, it is considered by some to be the most biodiverse place in the world. Also, due to its isolation from the Andes mountain range, the number of endemic species is considerable. The Ensenada de Utria Park is home to more than 125 species of mammals, 400 of birds and 1000 of reptiles and this without taking into account the marine ecosystem. Underwater, it contains 2 coral reefs located 3km from the coast.
