Landscapes of Colombia: the Caribbean

Quel est le plus beau paysage de la Colombie ? It’s a question we’re often asked, but one that’s extremely difficult to answer. Colombia’s landscapes are incredibly varied: the sea and the ocean, forests Páramo (a tropical mountain ecosystem at an altitude of between 3,000 and 5,000 metres) and breathtaking deserts.

The Caribbean region is an excellent example of the diversity of Colombia’s landscapes. In just 10% of its territory, it includes thousands of kilometres of beaches, an isolated mountain range in the Andes cordillera with peaks over 5,000 metres high, mangroves home to dozens of species that are unique in the world, and the Guajira desert, located on the peninsula of the same name. Its main cities, Cartagena de Indias, Barranquilla and Santa Marta, with their colourful colonial architecture, further enrich the range of possibilities. But let’s stop there with the descriptions and give way to the images:

COLOMBIA’S LANDSCAPES: THE CARIBBEAN

TOLU AND COVEÑAS

Known for the quality of its crystal-clear turquoise sea and its golden and white beaches, it is a little-known spot for foreign tourists.

LORICA, ONE OF COLOMBIA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES

Its architecture is considered a jewel thanks to its blend of Arab, Mudéjar and Republican styles, the result of its many migrations.

MOMPOX

On the banks of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s most important river, the landscape of Mompox looks like something out of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez book.

ROSARIO ISLANDS

This archipelago of 27 islands is very easy to get to and is a real paradise.

LA GUAJIRA

A department located on the peninsula of the same name at the northernmost point of South America, it is covered by one of Colombia’s two deserts. Its desert landscape contrasts with the colourful clothing of the area’s inhabitants, the indigenous Wayuus, and its immense coal reserves.
